Celebrating the 95th anniversary of the national university

This year we are celebrating the 95th anniversary of the national university, a university where the education is given in our mother tongue, Estonian. In relation to that, many great events are happening in Tartu. The list of the events along with information about tickets and other things can be seen here: www.ut.ee/en/national-university95. We, the Academic Women’s Choir of the University of Tartu, are naturally taking part in some of the events.

On Saturday, 29th November we will be performing at the festive anniversary show at Vanemuine concert hall. We will share the stage with other singers from the Estonian University of Life Sciences and singers, dancers and instrumentalists from the University of Tartu. And of course a well-known Estonian band called Paabel. We will perform an oratorio "Loomiselugu" ("Story of Creation"), which was written for the XVI Gaudeamus song and dance festival in 2011 by Tauno Aints and Anzori Barkalaja. The second part of the show is called "Helin mu rinna sees" ("Sound In My Chest") and will be performed by the students of the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy.

On Monday, 1st December we will sing at the annual academic anniversary ceremony. This takes place in the main building of the University of Tartu. In the evening we will participate in the traditional torchlight procession with other members of the university.

The Estonian Female Song Society celebrated its 20th anniversary

On October 19th the Estonian Female Song Society celebrated its 20th anniversary by organising a concert. Our choir too joined the festivities. The concert took place in the Estonia concert hall in Tallinn. It was crowded. Besides the stage, even most of the audience seats were filled with singing women. Besides singing, the festivities included announcing the new honorary members of the society, receiving greetings from men and other guests at the event and presenting a new CD.
The CD (which actually consists of two CDs) has 34 tracks on it, all of them performed by Estonian women’s and girls’ choirs and two of them, in fact, by our choir. The track list of the CD can be seen and the CD can be bought from the following website:

Coming soon: Nordic Student Singers' Summit

The 9th Nordic Student Singers’ Summit will take place in Tartu on 24th - 27th April. The festival will bring together 1300 singers from Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. Our choir is one of the main organisers of this grandiose event. Almost all of our singers are taking part in the organising in order to create a great festival and the chief is Maarja Ülper, one of our I sopranos. The artistic half of the festival is shaped by our conductor Triin Koch together with the director Anne Türnpu and the composer Maria Kõrvits.

During the festival 10 smaller concerts and one big gala concert will bring lots of marvelous choir music to the listeners. At the gala concert which will take place on April 26th, we will fill a large empty room with thoughts and music, both reflecting a Nordic essence, our sea, forests and cities. Suddenly, breaking waves, soughing fir-tops and the smell of wet asphalt after a rainy summer day can be felt in the middle of Tartu. The concert will tell a story about our Nordic nature, which we conclude with the playful pair of words ME (in Estonian "we") / WE.

In order to have a great gala concert we are gathering donations at
Hooandja to build a sports hall into a concert hall. More information about the festival, it’s various concerts and buying tickets is accessible through the festival web page nsss2014.ut.ee.

Come and see us at the festival!
