TÜAN goes to Ireland to compete with the best amateur choirs from around the world

The Academic Women’s Choir of the University of Tartu and conductor Triin Koch will participate in the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition that is held during Cork International Choral Festival from the 26th to 30th of April 2023. The competition brings together 11 different choirs from around the world that were selected by an artistic committee. In addition to competing, the choir will take part in 4 more performances during the festival.

The reputable Cork International Choral Festival was first held in the year 1954 and is well-known for its high artistic level. The Academic Women’s Choir of the University of Tartu has taken part in the festival twice before, in 1997 and 2008. This being their first international competition after the pandemic, the choir is most focused on testing out their current vocal form and developing their skills as a team. The last time the choir competed abroad was in 2019 in The Vietnam International Choir Competition. Still, it is not their first competition in 2023 – in March The Academic Women’s Choir of the University of Tartu competed on national level and was able to defend their title as Estonian best women’s choir in the competition of Estonian Women’s Song Society.

The possibility to participate in the international competition is possible thanks to financial supporters. Tartu Students Club, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the City of Tartu are helping with travel costs, as well as many private sponsors of the choir via Hooandja, an Estonian co-financing platform.
